    Greetings HRCSD Educators,

Welcome to 2017! I hope you all enjoyed the winter break and celebrated the coming of a new year with the people you cherish. So many good things happened across our school district in 2016: your collective work brought increased graduation rates, increases in student attendance, increases in the numbers of students taking dual credit/college-level coursework, decreased suspension/expulsion rates, a great number of athletic and academic championships and honors, and a substantial community-supported capital bond.

  • 03-17-17 - Community Feedback Requested on Declining Public School Funding

The Hood River County School District is soliciting community feedback on how to best cope with the state legislature's announcement that Oregon Public Schools will be funded far below what is necessary to maintain our current programs and personnel. Currently, the Oregon Legislature is planning to fund our public schools at approximately $2 billion dollars short of the national average. After more than two decades of declining public school funding and cuts to local schools, our community's schools will need an additional $600 million in the Oregon State School Fund to avoid program and personnel cuts.

Please take a few minutes to provide feedback on budget and priorities for the upcoming 17-18 school year.

  • 01-13-17 - Hood River County School District Facilities Assessed For Safety
Significant snow levels in Hood River County in recent weeks have forced a number of school closures and delays. Our decisions to operate or not have all been made with student safety as our top priority. In light of the storms, we have been monitoring and analyzing our facilities to ensure our students and staff remain safe, warm, and dry.

You may know that in Bend this week, an elementary school gym roof collapsed because of the heavy snow load. Fortunately, the building was unoccupied at the time of the collapse and no one was injured. Our thoughts go out to the staff and families in Bend as they deal with the ramifications of repair, rebuilding, and finding alternate locations to teach students.

Hood River County School District maintenance staff, our construction bond project manager, and administrative officials have spent time over the last few days (in consultation with a structural engineer and architects) analyzing the snow load on our roofs, ensuring drains are clear and functioning, and determining if the weight on the roofs is exceeding design standards. Today, every facility was directly inspected and we are pleased to report a sense of confidence and relief that our facilities are faring well.

We will continue to communicate information about school closures, make-up days, and more as the winter weather season continues. When it is overcast outside, just know that it is bright and vibrant inside our schools. We hope that you stay safe and warm.
